Vanuatu (Torba) Project
Update 31st October 2007
"Most Wonderful Workings of Divine
Providence..."
|
"There will be a series of events revealing that
God is Master of the situation. The
truth will be proclaimed in clear,
unmistakable language. As a people we must
prepare the way of the Lord under the overruling guidance of the Holy
Spirit. The gospel is to be given in its
purity...Through most wonderful
workings of divine
providence,
mountains of difficulty will be removed and cast
into the sea. The message that means so much to the
dwellers upon the earth will be heard and
understood. Men
will know what is truth. Onward and still onward the
work will advance until the whole earth shall have been warned, and then
shall the end come." Ellen G White,

Greetings again from Remote Northern
Vanuatu!
Amazed By God's
Goodness
I
am still in a state of amazement and shock. I have just returned from the
US where Laymen Ministries was donated an aircraft for the Vanuatu Project. In
mid August I got an email from our Director, Jeff Reich who said I should come
to the US to meet a guy called Joe-the kind man who donated the aircraft. We
were just preparing for our District Meeting here in Vanuatu when I received the
call to go-spiritual battles had been fought to enable our District Meeting
to take place, so I felt that I couldnt leave Vanuatu before the meeting was
over. We had an excellent meeting and God really blessed. Then the day after the
meetings closed, Naomi, Kay and I flew down to Santo. I didnt feel
comfortable about Naomi and Kay remaining here on the remote island of
Gaua while I was away in US, as it is very isolated here. In any
emergency situation, it would be difficult for them to get help. So they
decided to stay with some fellow missionaries at Aore Adventist
Academy-Jill and Alistair MacGillivray, while I was away in the US. Meanwhile I
flew to Brisbane, Australia and the following day to the
US.
Maule Aircraft Donated to Vanuatu
Project
After meeting up with Jeff and LM cameraman
Glen in Idaho, we travelled to Arizona to meet the donor of the our new
Maule aircraft-Joe. Joe is an exceptionally generous, kind, friendly and
pleasant person. It was a pleasure to meet him and to hear what he had to say
about the plane and how God had led him to decide to donate it.
A Brand New Search & Rescue
Plane
What was most surprising to me was to set eyes
on the fantastic aircraft Joe donated. This plane is almost brand new-a 2003
model aircraft which was set up by the factory and first owner for Search &
Rescue operations.
What could be more appropriate?
Our mission is to search and rescue for the lost sheep of Torba
Province!

A 5 Minute Miracle
Joe lives in Arizona. His children
purchased a satellite dish for him one day so he could watch the Hope Channel
and 3ABN television. When he came back from church one Sabbath, he saw the TV
there and instead of going for his usual Sabbath afternoon nap, he sat down to
watch his new TV channel. When he turned it on, the first thing that came on was
"Ring of Fire". Its a video about our Vanuatu project. Joe only got to see
the last 5 minutes of the video, where I make an appeal for an aircraft
for our project. Joe is close to retiring age, and has been a pilot all his
life. He has owned several aircraft, and the most recent one is a Maule
Aircraft. He had never known of Laymen Ministries, but he did feel impressed
that he should give his aircraft for the Vanuatu Project. So he wrote down the
phone number which appears at the end of the video, and called
later.
Meanwhile We Only Dare to Settle for
Second Best
When Joe called Laymen Ministries, Jeff was in
Australia, and so was I, in April this year. Jeff was preaching at a camp
meeting in New South Wales and I was in Queensland looking at aircraft. Our
original plans to build a kit aircraft didnt seem the way to go-it would
take too long to build it. In the weeks leading up to this point, I had set
my heart on a Maule aircraft-only recently had I come in contact with Maules.
[Previously we had been planning on a kit built aircraft or a Cessna
172 but the Maule seemed better in every way.] The
Maule seemed to be all that we were looking for. I even flew up to a
remote airstrip in outback Queensland to check one out. But the price was just
out of our range-for a Maule in need of repair. A good quality Maule was
completely out of the budget. So I was now settling for second best-which I
thought was a Cherokee 180. A totally different type of aircraft, but good in
different ways. Jeff and I figured that our idea of a Maule was out of the
question for financial reasons. I was now on the very verge of purchasing a
cheap old (1968) Cherokee for about the price of two family cars.
Almost Beyond
Belief
Then Terri at Laymen Ministries contacted us
from the US about a possible aircraft offer from the guy called 'Joe'.
But Jeff and I more or less immediately dismissed the Maule
offer because we thought this offer was probably an offer of a 'donation on
condition' that we pay for part of it. If that was the case, our bank balance
would still end up in the red when the deal was done. (Sometimes donors give
gifts for a part donation, part sale.) Meanwhile I was getting serious
about a Cherokee in Western Australia because it seemed that God was
calling us to a decision at this point. When Jeff got back to the US he
stalled me because he felt that the Cherokee was not the one. Immediately after
contacting me about that, he received a phone call from Joe. Jeff still thought
Joe's Maule would turn out to be a semi-gift, semi-purchase deal, and he didnt
believe that it would come to anything as we didnt have the money for something
like that. As he got to know more about Joe's Maule, he realized that it
was just what we had originally wanted but much more. It was new and fully
decked with avionics! It surely sounded like exactly what we were looking for.
Finally it dawned on Jeff that Joe was actually offering to
donate the aircraft for $0! Almost beyond belief, gladly Jeff accepted
and contacted me in Australia. I was about to fly to Western Australia
to arrange for the deal with the Cherokee. We were all jolted by
this sudden change of direction and the unexpected indication of God's
providence, but gladly submitted to God's incredible plan!
"This is Your Plane,
Lord!"
Joe related how he had made that decision to
give the plane to the Laymen Ministries Vanuatu Project, then put it in a hangar
at a small rural airport in Arizona. Only a couple of weeks later he
received a phone call in the night from someone down at the airport. A violent
wind storm had come through the airport and ripped a large part of the roof off
Joe's hangar. The door had been blown in, and was jammed, preventing anyone from
being able to see how Joe's Maule was. After receiving the phone call, Joe was
concerned, because he knew that the plane's brakes were not on, nor was it tied
down inside the hangar, also he had not chocked the wheels. He didnt rush
to the hangar that night but he did remind the Lord that he had already
given the plane to Him. It was no longer Joe's plane. Last year a
similar wind storm destroyed a plane that was inside the hangar next
door. But Joe decided to leave the plane where he had already left it: in God's
loving hands!
Angel in the Storm Leaves 'Reminder
Scratch'
When Joe got to the airport in the morning, he
discovered that a plane right outside the hangar was upside down, totally
wrecked by the storm. He eventually got into the hangar, expecting to see some
damage to the Maule. But to his amazement, he could not find a scratch. He did
find the door of the hangar buckled in to within a couple of feet of
the nose of the Maule aircraft! Actually when we got there, we also
saw the roof, which was still ripped off, and the wrecked aircraft, which
was still upside down (see it for yourself on the video), and I did also find a
small scratch on the right aerolon. When I showed Joe he immediately concluded
that that must have happened somehow during the wind storm. I told him that I
thought the the same angel that was taking care of the plane might have allowed
a piece of flying debris to put a little reminder scratch on the plane so that
we will remember what the angel was doing during that storm! Did you know that
angels sometimes leave "Reminder Scratches" behind them? [Order the full story on the new "Miracle Maule" DVD video

God's Mule in the
Sky
After hearing of the miraculous preservation of
Joe's plane, the time came for the handover to take place. We prayed that Joe
would be mightily blessed in return for his kindness and the deal was
done-ownership was officially transferred to Laymen Ministries. With
great pleasure Jeremy Aimsworth (renowned International Maule expert) and I
had the pleasure of flying the aircraft up to San
Francisco, California for preparation for shipment to Vanuatu. On this trip
I was impressed by the aircraft's extremely smooth-running engine, fancy
avionics, and incredible performance. I prefer the feel of the Maule to any
other aircraft I have flown. It feels very stable and is easy to fly. A Maule is
like a mule-a highly practical utility vehicle that flies through the
sky! I affectionately refer to it as a Flying Mule-its really designed
as a 4 to 5 seat heavy hauler for rough and short-field operations. It certainly
has no shortage of lift and is almost impossible to stall. Jeremy later
valued the aircraft at US$162,000! Thank you Joe! May God bless
you!
Alaskan Bushwheels Ready to
Spin
After delivering the aircraft to San Francisco,
where final paperwork and preparations are still under way before the plane is
shipped to Vanuatu, I returned to Idaho where we received more good news.
Alaskan Bushwheels, a company that supply special wheels for Maule aircraft
flying into bush type situations, said that they would give us over US $6000
worth of bushwheels for the Maule. We greatly appreciate this kind gift and hope
it will enable us to get safely into some of the rougher airstrips in Vanuatu.
Thank you Bill at Alaskan Bushwheels.
With Bush Pilot Expert on the
Canadian Border
Following this, I also had the privilege of
spending some quality flying time with bush pilot Rick Geiger in Montana. This
friendly guy gave me some excellent training regarding the flight
characteristics of Maules, focussing especially on Maule performance in strong
cross winds, headwinds, short airstrips and rough airstrips. I have had
bush pilot training and received a tail dragger endorsement in
outback Australia previously, but this was Maule-specific training and was more
intense and specific. Many issues to do with Maule aircraft performance were
settled during that time-there is no doubt about it: a Maule is a different
sort of an animal when compared to your average Cessna or
Cherokee! Personally I really like the way a Maule flies and feels.
And I like the instrument panel. We did some time together up there
close to the Canadian border (landing where planes dont normally land!) and
this was a great opportunity for me to get a type-specific feel for how a
Maule performs in remote strip situations. I considered that time
extremely valuable. Rick was a blessing in many other ways too. He also
spent a lot of time with me teaching maintenance issues with the Maule (Maules
are particularly easy to maintain), and while I was with him, we did a 100
hourly/annual Certificate of Airworthiness on his Maule. (Rick is also an
aircraft engineer.) All this was incredible experience, and at the end of it
Rick decided to donate all that time to our ministry! Thank You
Rick!
Wings Removed for
Shipment
So right now the aircraft is being prepared for
shipment to Vanuatu. It will come in a shipping container-of course an aircraft
engineer is removing the wings temporarily for that purpose. The flying mule has
to have its wings removed to fit in a shipping container! He is also
installing an HF radio so that we will have long range communication facilities
on board. A considerable amount of paperwork lies ahead of us, getting it
imported and registered in Vanuatu. We are confident that just as God has led up
to this point, He will see us through all that lies ahead of us! After all, it
is His plane, right?!
God at Work among the
Tax-Collectors
Very recently we have received wonderful news
from the Vanuatu Customs Office. Not only has God provided a free aircraft, but
now we hear that the Vanuatu Customs people are going to allow it to be imported
VAT [Value Added Tax] and Duty free! We have prayed so much
about this, and it is so encouraging to hear that God has heard our
prayers, impressing hearts among these Tax-Collectors. Yes, Jesus is still
at work among the Tax-Collectors of today! That news brings a big sigh
of relief for us. VAT alone on this aircraft would have cost us US$22,000 (about
AU$26,000)! This is just another item in a growing list of
providential events revealing God's amazing leading regarding this plane.
It makes me think that God surely must have some special plans for
it!
Time to Move
Homebase
We now have plans to build a small but sturdy
cyclone proof hangar for the plane. Actually we need it for multiple reasons.
The place we are staying in now is starting to need major repairs. It was a
temporary situation anyway, made available to us through the kindness of a local
politician at no cost. But now the roof leaks, its impossible to mosquito
proof, ratproof or bug proof it, and we need to be nearer the
airstrip which is about 6 miles north of at the top of the island. We also need
a better boat mooring because the tides cut off our access to the ocean a lot of
the time where we now are. After much prayer and consideration, over the past
year, we have found an almost ideal spot to build a hangar and homebase.
Benefits of this new location are:
-
Adjacent to Gaua airstrip;
-
Gaua airstrip is one of the longest, and
best-maintained grass strips in the country;
-
During heavy rainfall, the slope and base of
the airstrip are such that it is still usable; in contrast many other
airstrips become unusable in heavy rain;
-
Amazingly, Air Vanuatu keeps some
reserve aviation fuel at Gaua airstrip; this means that even in this
remote place we actually have avgas available to us;
-
A local businessman who is an SDA has made a
special agreement with us to use his land adjacent to the
airstrip;
-
This location is nearer the Matavanga SDA
church and future SDA school
-
This land is also near an excellent boat
mooring spot; copra ships can get excellent access to this area; we can get in
and out at any time, regardless of tides;
-
The boat mooring is in Aver Bay-one of the
safest bays in Torba province (often used by boats, yachts and ships during
cyclones/hurricanes);
-
This location is very central to the Banks
islands; it will give us access by plane and boat to many areas of Torba
province.
We have prayed a lot about this new base, and
plan to extend the hangar to make a place where we can stay...a 'shed or barn
dwelling'. God has provided a small house nearby, where we have been told we can
stay while building the hangar & homebase. We believe that as we move
forward, God will provide the funding for this hangar-homebase. Its all in His
loving hands, of course!
Emergencies & Action Back on
Gaua
Since our arrival back in Gaua less than a
week ago, we are back into the action at full pace. Since our arrival we
have had a scalp laceration case to take care of, an ectopic pregnancy case, a
serious rheumatic fever case, and a significant pneumonia case. Today I
examined a patient who had been dragged around by the neck and violently beaten
after being accused of stealing. Later in the day I sutured the end of a
finger back on following yet another bush-knife injury-we think the
amputated tissue was still viable when he got here and will 'take'.
The only vehicles on the island (apart from our 4 wheel motorcycle) are dead,
making it difficult to transport patients or sand or anything else.
Unfortunately our cat died while we were away so we will have more rats to deal
with now. Also, while we were away, one of my patients who was scared of
being referred for surgery to Santo ended up dying following complications
of a large pelvic/abdominal mass, probably a tumor. We have backsliders to
nurture (no shortage of backsliders here) and open invitations to many
places that we have not yet followed up. Our boat is carting sand for the church
building extension, the students want classes again, and the community kids want
our attention the rest of the time!
Restful Order in Our Private
Worlds
The life of a medical missionary is
undeniably public and busy-even for one living on a slow-paced tropical
island! Whether we like it or not, our lives feel as if
we are 'on display'. We have to continually strive for
privacy and seclusion, but it generally escapes us. That can become a
overwhelming problem in itself. But it doesnt have to overwhelm. Jesus
was much more busy than we are during His ministry, but He
never permitted that 'busyness' to overwhelm Him. HERE'S THE
KEY: Keep your private world in order, attending to it daily, like a
well-kept garden...
Its OK to be very active as
a missionary
as long as the very core of
your life is well-ordered,
your priorities are in harmony with God's plan for
your life,
your lifestyle is truly a
wholesome one,
God's message of hope is
burning on your lips,
your mission in life is totally focussed
on the Saviour's work for the lost,
and you can say with a clear
conscience that everything is right between you and your
Creator.
How else can we achieve this
priceless restfulness and order-except through prayer? Through prayer
we can truly unwind and focus. Through prayer we contact the Infinite Mind of
God. Through prayer, we find deep restfulness of spirit. Its in prayer
that life's greatest victories are gained and the energies of the soul
are equipped for a day of life's battles. What about your
private world, friend? Is it in order? Have you found this deep
Sabbath-like 'rest'? If you havent, strive for it, work for it, be sure that you
have done all you can to secure it. Dont leave home without
it!
The Incredibly Varied Life of a
Missionary
Over the last few months we have had a few
moments to consider where God has taken our lives since we got
involved in this missionary project in Vanuatu. Our lives have expanded in
all directions. It feels like every talent, every strength and even every
weakness, is being stretched to the max. But its not an overwhelming thing. God
knew where we needed to be right now. And right here, we
are living the life which we love to live...and best of
all, its a life for Him, to Him and by Him! Being from a farming
background, I have always thought that farmers have to be adaptable people, and
end up living varied lives. A farmer usually ends up knowing how to do
everything that needs to be done on a farm-which often consists of a huge
variety of things. Missionary work is the same-but much
more so. What other occupation would I get to live such an incredibly
diversified life? When I am here in remote Vanuatu, I feel like a rich man in a
poor country, but when I visited the US recently, for a short while, I felt
(just a feeling I guess) like a poor man in a rich country! Thats
good-it gives you two totally different perspectives on life! As a
missionary I get to live in a bungalow only one step up from a grass hut. But
recently I felt like an executive flying overseas to have a video interview
which will end up on 2 global television networks, and to arrange shipment
of an aircraft to Vanuatu. On the water, I get to captain the boat, and back at
our island home, I get to teach the students, I get to do surgery, pull teeth,
pull more teeth and pull more teeth! I do accounting, arrange building
projects, preach, teach, heal, deligate, communicate, facilitate, and many
other things...the list goes on. I enjoy the thrill of being involved in so
many activities, as long as every part is meaningful and glues together to
contribute to God's work here. In contrast to the life of a missionary, many
people, especially in western culture, live very specialized
lives...and find themselves bored. I would describe the life of a
missionary as 'the extreme opposite of boring'! To me, there is no
life more interesting or challenging or motivating or just plain
incredible, than the life of a missionary for God.
We Never Would Have
Believed
Friend, if we had known how God was going to provide for
this project as He has done, how much we would have looked forward to God's
'most wonderful workings of Divine Providence'! But perhaps if we had known, we
never would have believed!
Why Is God Doing
This?
God's provision has been truly remarkable! We
feel awed. But is it for us alone? No way! Its for others that God is doing this
in front of our eyes. We are merely watching God at work. And why is God
doing this? Is God blessing because we are more worthy or special than
anyone else? Certainly not! We are definitely no more worthy
of God's blessing than anyone else. We know that God's plan is much bigger than
we are, and that we are merely clay in His hands. Isnt it because He loves His
children that He does things in His way and in His time. Is it
not because 'the message that means so much'
to the inhabitants of the earth MUST BE PREACHED? Before
Jesus comes, the work must go more rapidly, for the
further we go, the behinder we get. The world is, as yet, largely unwarned,
while the judgements of God begin to fall and we all know that surely the end is
near! The work is big, and before Jesus comes again, like or not, ready or
not, the MESSAGE MUST GO!
No Excuse Now
If we ever doubted God's ability to provide for
the work we are doing in His strength and for His glory, then there is certainly
NO EXCUSE NOW! What more evidence does a man need
that God is both willing and able and urgently wanting to help him to go forward
in faith to do something...anything, to prepare a people for the second return
of Jesus? It seems to me that God has blessed our cries for help. And the time
is come to get more earnestly into the work of sharing God's Last Message of
Love for a lost planet full of lost souls.
"It is time for Thee, Lord, to work...for they have made void Thy law."
Psalm
119:126
Proof Positive!
Friend, the Lord has proven His faithfulness, as
far as we are concerned. Proof positive! I am convinced! Are you
waiting, halting, lingering, as if you needed a nudge to get more
fully involved? My friend, it really is true! Dont hesitate to
invest yourself in the Lord's work. He is able and willing and totally
ready (now) to bless you and to provide for your every need. Go
forward, trusting, hoping, and believing. Fulfil the conditions of His rich
promises, and you can be sure that all will come together.
There Must Be A
Secret!
For those who may be wondering if there is a
secret in all this-YES there is: let me share it. Read the following
statement carefully and try it out for yourself:
When ALL YOU
HAVE becomes HIS then ALL HE HAS becomes
YOURS.
So if YOU dont
have enough means to do HIS work, then Give to HIM
the Gift of ALL YOU DO HAVE.
...HE will then
provide YOU with EVERYTHING YOU COULD POSSIBLY
NEED...
...And Remember: It is
Prayer that Moves the Arm that Moves the
World!
[Read it again.]

Life is Short
Friend, soon it will all be over.
Life is short. Real short. Too
short.
The world as we know it cannot go on much
longer.
Evidence abounds that the way we live is not
sustainable.
And before you know it, your life will slip
through your hands too.
Why not let your life count for
something?
Why not do what you can to be ready for when
your life comes to an end?
The golden moment is now-never has this moment
been better than now.
Lets do what we can to get someone ready for
heaven, including you.
And hey-why not take someone with
you?

Monday was an exciting day for us and our neighbours. All the goods we had
prepared for shipment from Australia 6 months, ago finally arrived in Gaua.
It was taken off the small trading vessel and carried in an aluminum dingy to
our little black sand beach about 500 meters from our house. Some of the cartons
got a bit wet along the way, but thankfully nothing was damaged. With eager
helpers all 33 items were soon carried up to our bungalow.
Some of our friends who helped carry our cartons have been waiting for more
than six months for this moment. Just before we left for Australia in February
this year, several people asked us to purchase some things for them, ranging
from marbles to portable dvd players!
DVD Ministry Launch
As soon as the cartons reached our yard, we opened up the one containing the
portable dvd players, and our friends were very happy to see that they had
finally arrived. We have been told by some local people that these portable dvd
players with screens are probably the first to reach Vanuatu, and of all places
in Vanuatu, they have come to the most remote area first!
The next morning was a training session in how to use and re-charge the dvd
players using solar panels and a truck battery. Since there is no electricity
here in Gaua everyone must be "savy" about generators, solar and battery
power.
Next came a prayer of dedication that the dvd players will only be used to
bring honour and glory to God, which was accompanied by many hearty amens. (The
only DVDs videos that seem to be available in this area are violent and or
immoral.) We are truly thankful for friends back in Australia who have been
providing us with good quality dvd's for our lending library. Now that these
three men have their own personal dvd players, we will be able to share more
information with them. These men are part of a church group called NTM (Neil
Thomas Ministry) and are very open-minded. They are the same group that invited
us to run the children's program earlier this year, and have requested that we
go back and run another program at the end of the year. They have made a
decision not to watch any more of the "rubbish videos" that are so popular
here.
Please keep them and their families in your prayers, as they are learning to
walk in the new light that they are receiving.
While Mark has been away overseas, Kay and I had
a refreshing break at Aore Adventist Academy, where we stayed with friends. It
was nice to have some more relaxing time and enjoyed the beauty of Aore. While
there we also made friends with some of the staff and students who are also
needing good resources to share in their classes, or for other outreach
purposes. Thanks to those of you who have been supplying us with good quality
DVD's to share. One evening we were asked to share with a couple about the work
we are doing here in Torba, then we gave them a couple of DVD's since they have
a laptop computer. They shared them with some of the staff, and it was decided
to show "Escape The Black Hole" the next Friday evening for vespers where more
than 100 people were able to get the blessing. The need is great, but so has
been the supply! We are truly thankful for all the help we have received in this
area, and know that many lives are already being touched by what they have seen.
Many of the students at Aore come from non-SDA families, and when they go home
to their various islands they often share what they have learned at
Aore.
We also had the privilege of going with a group
of Aore students to Matevulu College one Sabbath. Matevulu College is about 40
minutes drive from Luganville, and is situated in a beautiful location. It has a
wonderful view of the ocean, and is only a few minutes walk from the famous Blue
Pools that tourists love to visit. It is a government school, but has a number
of SDA staff and about 60 SDA students currently, which meet every Sabbath in
the spacious library. The group from Aore took the morning service, then we
enjoyed a combined lunch, followed by a walk to the beautiful blue pools. They
are so blue and clear, yet very, very deep. After our walk we all went back to
the library for the afternoon program, where they showed the dvd "Escape The
Black Hole" by Pr Ivor Myers. It was well received and touched many hearts. Many
people are now asking where they can get a copy of it for themselves, as it
seems to be very relevant to the young people here. It is our prayer that the
seeds that have been sown will one day bear fruit to God's glory.
Conflict of The Ages Sets Start Preaching
During our recent District Meeting, which was held in Gaua, we were able to
distribute 12 sets of the Conflict of The Ages for all the ministers and laymen
are currently employed in Torba Province. They expressed deep appreciation for
the books and other literature that we shared, which we trust will help them in
their ministry.
Some of these ministers still don't own a Seventh-day Adventist Hymnal, so if
you happen to have one or two in your possession which you don't need, perhaps
you would like to send it here for us to pass on to these workers.

Christmas Came Early to Kiriliu by
Kay
I love being here in Vanuatu, one reason is because of the children. I have
never been anywhere where the kids are so easy to reach and so friendly.
As soon a we came back to Gaua from Santo, we had children around us.
It is very easy to make them happy, and to become their friend. Last Sabbath
(first weekend we were back) we sent the message out with some kids to tell our
friends that we would be taking the boat to church on Sabbath. The kids came
back with the news that nearly everyone was sick or had gone away for the
weekend. We almost decided not to take the boat because it wouldn't be worth all
the fuel, just for the three of us. But then we remembered that one small girl
had already keenly said that she wanted to come with us. Taking three people on
our 4 wheel motor-bike is ok, but to have a fourth person is a bit to much. So
we decided we would take the boat if a few more kids could come. So I asked our
neighborhood kids if they wanted to come. (It often seems to be the case that
the children are more receptive than the adults and even the youth). Five more
kids eagerly said yes, so the decision was made to take the boat. Sabbath
morning, I just woke up and went outside and found six kids all ready and
waiting to go to church. To our surprise John Fox came home Friday evening and
received the message that we were taking the boat to church. John decided that
he would come and bring a small boy with him. So Sabbath morning found seven
kids, John, and us going in the boat to church! We had a good day and the church
was full - especially when our crowd arrived! It was the first time for some of
those kids to enter an Adventist church. Please continue to pray for these kids
that the seeds sown now will bring forth fruit in their young lives.
This week we finally received the shipment that we were working on when
we were in Australia in February. Before we went home to Australia, we had
requests from some of the neighborhood kids for a few small things that they
really wanted. We didn't promise that we would be able to get everything they
were asking for but we said we would try our best. Yesterday we asked all the
kids from our village (Kiriliu) to come to the house. They all came and we gave
them a a few clothes each, a tooth brush, soap, comb, and a back-pack each, and
some marbles that were specifically requested. They were all so glad! Some of
them have never had their own tooth brush before. They were overjoyed that with
just a few simple gifts. Truly Christmas came early to Kiriliu! I am so thankful
to God to be here and to be able to help these children, who are so
appreciative. Thank you also for the things that you have donated that are such
a blessing here.
Homeschool Life as a
Missionary
Living in a mission environment is a challenge for a home-schooler. The past
two years have been full of activity which I have enjoyed so much. I wouldn't
have traded the experience for anything. I have had so many interuptions to
me study while we have been here, for many reasons. But I have known all
along that I need to keep on top of my studies. In fact the last few months I
have been discouraged because it appeared that I was falling behind in my
studies and I wouldn't be able to catch up for a long time.
I have really had a burden to finish a certain book in my Mathematics by the
end of the year, but because we have been busy and the many interruptions we
have, I was beginning to think that it!would be impossible for me to accomplish
my goal.
Then Dad was asked to go to the US to help get the plane ready to be shipped.
It was planned for Mum and I to stay at Aore (near Santo), with some good
friends of ours. So we stayed at Aore for six weeks and I was amazed to realize
that I got about two thirds of my Mathematic book finished. I am so thankful to
God because He has helped me to do well in my studies. Not only did I cover a
lot of material, but I have also seemed to have understood it well.
I just want to encourage you especially if you are a the child of a
missionary and you are home-schooled. Maybe you have a similar situation to what
I have, in a busy environment, on the move a lot etc, but you feel like you are
getting behind in your studies. Don't become discouraged. Keep going forward and
if you put God first He will put you first and help you with your trials. Don't
wait till you have finished your studies before you give your life to Him. Do as
much as you can while you are young!

Would you like to help...?
God
has entrusted to us so many advantages and
opportunities! We feel the time has come to use all of
them to push His work forward!
If, after prayerful consideration, you
also feel impressed to help out in some
way with this project,
then for your own benefit, we encourage you
to decide now
to run the risk of being richly
blessed!
We have found that the spirit of generosity
brings about a 'reflex blessing' on the giver,
and we want you to experience this, just as
we have-so we can all become part of the channel of God's grace &
blessing together!
Why not claim Luke 6:38, take the
risk, and see what might happen to you?
